Winter Update! December 5, 2022

Shroud Exhibits in the News

Welcome to our Winter website update, which is another big one and our last update of 2022! Today's update leads off with news of our once-a-year fundraising effort and also includes details about two new Shroud exhibits that have gotten recent media attention. We have also added twelve more issues to the Collegamento pro Sindone archive, another update on the Holy Face Billboard Project, five pages of new (and a few old) papers and articles, and much more.

Today's update also includes links to a huge number of new podcasts featuring many prominent Shroud scholars, along with links to many websites, internet articles, books, videos and audios. Although not mentioned elsewhere in today's update, please note that the Shroud Speakers Directory page and the Shroud Booklist page have also been updated. Let me also take this opportunity to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and a joyous and healthy New Year! Enjoy the holidays and stay safe! - Barrie Schwortz, Editor

Here is the Update Table of Contents:

News From STERA, Inc.
Our Once-a-Year Fundraising Drive Starts Today

STERA, Inc. Secure Contribution Form

As regular visitors know, STERA, Inc. holds only one fundraising event a year, and today's update launches our 2022 annual fundraising effort to support the website and our other long term projects. As we have stated previously, with the large number of visitors we have each year, we could generate substantial revenue by allowing advertising on the site (like most websites do), but we have never allowed ads in our 27 year history and have no intention of allowing them in the future! That means that we need your support to help make up the difference and every contribution is fully tax deductible. As President of STERA, Inc., I am obligated to solicit contributions from our viewers and subscribers, just like every other non-profit in the world. However, unlike most non-profits, we prefer not to bombard you with continuous requests for contributions (which I am sure you appreciate). But now, that time has come again so here are some reminders of the ways you can support STERA, Inc.

The newest method for supporting STERA, Inc. is via "Deal Aid," which allows you to shop and save money at thousands of popular online retailers while they donate to STERA, Inc. at no cost to you. Unlike some other platforms that only donate 0.5% of their proceeds to the charity of your choice, Deal Aid will donate up to 50% of sales on each order. This is a great new way to support STERA, Inc. without spending anything beyond your normal online purchases.

Another means of supporting STERA, Inc. is via "Giving Assistant," which allows you to shop at more than 3000 of your favorite brand-name stores and receive cash back for all your purchases. You can then specify what percentage of your cash back earnings you would like to have automatically donated directly to STERA, Inc. We already have several supporters using this method and we encourage our viewers who shop online to help support us this way. You can save money and help STERA, Inc. at the same time!

For the past few years we have participated in a non-profit program from Amazon called "Amazon Smile," which allows you to shop as you normally do and Amazon donates 0.5% of the purchase price directly to STERA, Inc. They charge no fees for this service and you can even adjust your settings to automatically enter Amazon Smile every time you log on to their website. It provides an easy way to support our work and this website without spending anything extra. [NOTE: If you are an AmazonSmile customer, you can now support STERA, Inc. in the Amazon shopping app on your Android device! Simply follow these instructions to turn on AmazonSmile and start generating donations: 1: If you have the latest version of the Amazon Shopping App, open the App on your Android device. 2: View Settings and select AmazonSmile. 3: Follow the in-App instructions to complete the process.

We have also joined with eBay For Charity to provide an additional way to support Shroud.com and STERA, Inc. You can use it whether buying or selling on eBay and a percentage that you designate is donated to STERA, Inc.

You can also support STERA, Inc. and Shroud.com by purchasing items directly from our Website Store page. With the holidays fast approaching, you might want to review some of the items we make available, including a miniature Shroud replica, a set of high quality lithographic prints, several different Shroud transparencies in backlit PhotoGlow frames, a new, fine art print of the Shroud face and a number of DVD's. Any of them would make great gifts for your favorite Shroudie! Order by December 1st for Christmas delivery.

Of course, we have also made it very easy to safely make a tax deductible contribution online using PayPal or your credit or debit card via our Secure Contribution Form (or by clicking on the graphic at left or at the top of this article). Once on the page, just click the orange "Donate" button and follow the simple on screen instructions. The form also includes details on how you can contribute by Mail via check or even by telephone. Naturally, we hope many of you will contribute generously since we must rely in part on our viewers for financial support. We understand that you are constantly being asked to donate to many worthwhile organizations and hope you will consider STERA, Inc. and Shroud.com worthy of your support. As further incentive and to express our gratitude for your contributions, we are offering contributors a number of excellent gifts for their support. We thank you in advance for your consideration and generosity.

Shroud Exhibits in the News

The Mystery Man: Who was the Man of the Shroud of Turin?
(Link to Rome Reports 2 minute YouTube video in English)

The Mystery Man: Who was the Man of the Shroud of Turin?

As many of you have probably heard by now, a new exhibit titled, "The Mystery Man: Who was the Man of the Shroud of Turin?" opened on October 13, 2022 for public display at the Cathedral in Salamanca, Spain, where it is scheduled to remain until the end of this year. Produced by ArtiSplendore Exhibitions and curated by its founder, Alvaro Blanco, the centerpiece of the exhibit is a "hyper-realistic" model of the man of the Shroud that is claimed to be "the most accurate recreation to date of the face and body of Jesus." Future plans for the exhibit include a global tour, although no schedule or details have yet been announced. Here is a link to the official exhibition website: The Mystery Man Exhibition.

Unlike many Shroud related stories that barely make the news, this story was picked up and covered extensively in the online media. For example, the above link is to a short YouTube video from Rome Reports. Other media outlets that reported this story included EWTN Nightly News, the Catholic News Agency, Vatican News, The Pillar, The Tablet, the U.S. Sun and many more. Rather than including links to all of these articles here on this page, I have created a separate pdf file with links to many of the recent articles and videos that appeared regarding this exhibit. You can find it here: Mystery Man Exhibit Links December 2022.

Shroud Permanent Exhibit in Ann Arbor, Michigan

On October 7, 2022, a permanent "Who Is The Man of the Shroud?" exhibit opened to the public in the St. Thomas Shroud Room at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The exhibit, produced by APRA Othonia and the Legionaries of Christ, had been on display in Sacramento, California for the last decade and is identical to the permanent exhibits on display at the Notre Dame Center in Jerusalem and at the Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum university in Rome. If you happen to be in the Ann Arbor area, this is a great opportunity to see a truly excellent exhibit. Visit their website at the above link for exhibit hours, scheduling tours and other details.

In late September of this year I received information about the Ann Arbor exhibit directly from my dear friend Fr. Rafael Pascual, LC at Othonia International. He included a link to an English language web page titled, "Inauguration of the Shroud's Permanent Exhibit, Ann Arbor MI - October 7th, 2022" with details of the exhibit and encouraged me to share it with you. Today's update is our first opportunity to do that. Once on the page, scroll down to the "Recent Posts" section and click on the photo link to see many more images of the exhibit.

Twelve More Collegamento pro Sindone Printed Issues Added to Archive

Collegamento pro Sindone Issue #52
(Link to Collegamento pro Sindone archive on Shroud.com)

Our archive of all the earlier printed issues of the Italian language journal Collegamento pro Sindone (1985-2000) has been updated with twelve more issues (from January to December 1993 and 1994), all of which can be found on the Collegamento pro Sindone page here on Shroud.com, with sixty-two issues now available in the archive. Our sincere thanks to our dear friends Emanuela Marinelli and her brother, Maurizio Marinelli, for making them available to us.

The journal started publication of their print edition in February of 1985 and continued doing so through 2000, when they discontinued the printed version in favor of publishing it solely on their website. As the printed issues grew in size and scope of content, their importance as a credible Shroud journal also grew. Starting with their January-February 1986 issue, they published six issues each year for the next fifteen years, so the archive will eventually include all 90 of those early printed issues. Our sincerest thanks to Emanuela and all of the respected Shroud scholars and researchers who contributed to make this journal such an important resource.

Even More Holy Face Billboards In Michigan

Even More Holy Face Billboards In Michigan

As promised, our good friend Tony Cherniawski in Lansing, Michigan, has sent us an update on his efforts with the Holy Face Billboard Project. In addition to those mentioned in our previous website updates, Tony reports that eight more billboards went up since July. These are all placed in prominent locations and high traffic areas around Lansing. Tony worked closely with Val Kelly of the Holy Face Project to get the project started and STERA, Inc. assisted him by providing the image and some of the other materials he needed. We are honored to continue our work with Tony and Val and many others to keep this project growing.

Recently Published Papers & Articles

Walter McCrone's Research on the Shroud of Turin Under a Microscope
by Joseph G. Marino

Our lead in paper today is by Joe Marino, who took a closer look at the research and claims made about the Shroud by the late Dr. Walter McCrone. To this day, McCrone's conclusions remain the prime ammunition used by skeptics to reject the Shroud, even though the peer reviewed science concludes otherwise. In discussing the article with Joe while he was working on it, I mentioned a relevant event that I had participated in and he included it briefly in his paper. That quickly prompted me to write a more detailed account of the event and I have included that article in this update as well. See below for more details.

There are twenty-three papers in today's update (!) and they are listed chronologically, with the most recent paper at the top of the list. All have also been permanently archived on the Scientific Papers & Articles page (alphabetically by title) and the Website Library page (alphabetically by author) or, when appropriate, on the Religion and Philosophy page (alphabetically by title) and the Website Library page (alphabetically by author). Since there were too many to include on this page, we are only including two here and have once again created a separate pdf file that includes all of the links and descriptions in a single file that you can download and view at your convenience (see link below).

Recently Published Books

Several new Shroud related books were published since our last update so we are listing them here and have also permanently archived the new titles on the Shroud of Turin Booklist page (alphabetically by author). To make it easy to find the newest additions, we have annotated the listings with "(Added 5 DEC 2022)" so you can simply search for that phrase on the Booklist page should you forget the titles. In addition, our dear friend Emanuela Marinelli has provided us with an updated list of Shroud books in many different languages, which we have also added to the Booklist page. Thank you Emanuela!

Sindone - Attualità sulla Sindone di Lirey-Chambéry-Torino (Shroud - News on the Shroud of Lirey-Chambéry-Turin) by Pierluigi Baima Bollone

Above link is to the publisher's Italian language website. Here is a link to Emanuela Marinelli's review of this book: Seeing Christ through the Shroud. Here is the online description:

"The book starts from the reality of the historical figure of Christ and early Christianity on the basis of the secular, canonical literature of the New Testament and the apocryphal writings, from the theories on the dates of Jesus' birth, his preaching and his death on the cross. It describes the Shroud of Lirey-Chambéry-Turin, the city where it has been kept continuously since 1578, except for two brief interruptions. It exhibits the conjectural history, for the most ancient period, and the certain one on European soil from 1353 to the present day. Finally, the archaeological, product and scientific data on the ancient fabrics in relation to those of the Shroud are exhibited. In particular, the text illustrates the anthropological, medical and medico-legal elements which lead, together with the others, to affirm that the Shroud is very likely authentic and that it is the true burial sheet of Jesus."

Hardcover: 384 pages
Publisher: Giappichelli (November 2022)
Language: Italian
ISBN-13: 978-8892122246

Le Saint Suaire de Turin - Témoin de la Passion de Jésus-Christ (The Shroud of Turin - Witness to the Passion of Jesus Christ) by Jean-Christian Petitfils

Above link is to the publisher's French language website. Here is an excerpt from the online description (via Google English translation):

"The Holy Shroud of Turin is this shroud preserved in the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist which presents the double ventral and dorsal imprint of a crucified dead, scourged and tortured, with all the signs of the Passion (traces of the stroke of the spear and the crown of thorns…). Did he really witness the burial of Jesus the Nazarene in Jerusalem on April 3, 33?. There is an abysmal discrepancy between what misinformed people repeat, who persist in supporting outdated theses, such as the unfortunate carbon-14 analysis of 1988, distorted by several pollutions and erroneously assigning this famous linen fabric a medieval dating, and the latest scientific experiments, all converging, going in the opposite direction..."

Paperback: 464 pages
Publisher: Tallandier (August 25, 2022)
Language: French

Shroud Related Videos and Audios

Shroud Wars: Panel Review Show (Part 2)
Dating the Shroud (with new guest Mark Guscin & Others)

As we have reported in recent updates, there has been an enormous increase in online Shroud related podcast video and audio programs, which now outstrip the number of Shroud internet articles that used to dominate the web. Today's update is no exception and includes another large selection of interviews with or presentations by many notable Shroud scholars. The real value of the podcast format is that the programs are usually unedited and do not have the same strict time limits that standard cable television documentaries do. That means you get to hear directly from the Shroud experts without interruption or editing. That allows them to go into more detail about their work and gives the viewer a better chance to understand it. You will find many familiiar names (and a few new ones) included on this list, which takes up seven pages in today's update! Since there were far too many to include on this page, we have once again created a separate pdf file that includes all of the links and descriptions in a single file that you can download and view at your convenience (see link below). Items are listed in chronological order with the most recent at the top of the list.

The Shroud on the Internet

Holy Shroud Fragrance
(Link to fragrance website)

Although this section is not as extensive as the videos and audios section mentioned above, there are still three pages of articles and links to new internet content in today's update! Of course, we can't include everything on this page, so we have once again created a separate pdf file that includes all of the links and descriptions in a single file that you can download and view at your convenience (see link below). Items are listed in chronological order with the most recent at the top of the list.

Summer/Fall Update! August 31, 2022

Postgraduate Certificate in Shroud Studies 2022-2023

Welcome to our Summer/Fall website update, which is another big one! Today's update leads off with news of open enrollment for an important Shroud postgraduate course that can be taken online and is taught by many notable Shroud scholars. Other news includes a hint from Turin about a possible 2025 public exhibition of the Shroud, the latest BSTS Newsletter, a new issue of Sindon, additional issues added to the Collegamento pro Sindone archive, an update on the Holy Face Billboard Project, a memorial for a departed Shroud scholar and much more.

Once again, our thanks to Joe Marino who has contributed a large number of new papers and articles for this update. There are also links to a huge number of new podcasts featuring many prominent Shroud scholars, along with links to many websites, internet articles, books, videos, audios and more! Although not mentioned elsewhere in today's update, please note that the Shroud Speakers Directory page has also been updated. Enjoy! - Barrie Schwortz, Editor

Here is the Update Table of Contents:

Postgraduate Certificate in Shroud Studies 2022-2023

Enrollment Now Open
(Above link to Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum website)

I am very pleased to announce that online enrollment is now open at the Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum in Rome for applicants to enroll in the Postgraduate Certificate in Shroud Studies program for the 2022-2023 semesters. The courses can be taken virtually online or by physical attendance at the university itself and many of the courses are available in multiple languages (Italian, Spanish, English). Please consult the above website for details of the program and academic requirements. If you are not interested in obtaining academic credits for the courses, auditing only is also available. You can easily enroll in the courses by using this direct link to their Online Enrollment Form. Enrollment period ends on October 31, 2022.

One of the great benefits the program provides is the who's who of notable Shroud scholars who are teachers and lecturers of the various courses. These include Nello Balossino, Bruno Barberis, Tristan Casabianca, Fr. Andrew Dalton, Paolo Di Lazzaro, Roberto Falcinelli, Ada Grossi, Kelly Kearse, Flavia Manservigi, Alfonso Munoz Cobo, Fr. Rafael Pascual, Marco Riani, Luigi Rodella, Alfonso Sanchez Hermosilla, Barrie Schwortz, Enrico Simonato and Joseph Spence. I personally believe the course is worth it just to hear directly from these prominent scholars. In the twelve years that I have been involved with this program, it has grown in scope and value and would be a definite benefit, not only to any serious Shroud researcher, but also to anyone who wants to learn more about this important and fascinating relic.

2025: New display of the Shroud?

2025: New display of the Shroud?
(Link to Italian language article)

An Italian language article published on July 7, 2022 by moleventiquattro discussed the possibility of a public exposition of the Shroud to celebrate the next Holy Year of the Catholic Church in 2025. Our thanks to Joe Marino for providing us with an English translation of the brief article, which we are including here:

The Holy Shroud could be unveiled in 2025. The Holy Year of the Catholic Church could be the occasion for the extension of the linen with which Jesus was buried. The words spoken yesterday by the new Archbishop of the city of Turin, Roberto Repole give hope for a new event for the faithful. The next Holy Year will be in 3 years, in 2025 and generally coinciding with the Jubilee there is the exposition of the Holy Shroud. The high Catholic prelate also immediately added that nothing is yet certain. But that traditionally, usually, in conjunction with that occasion, the relic is shown to the faithful.

The Holy Year for the Catholic Church occurs every 25 years, but it is possible that it will be announced in an extraordinary way by the will of the Bishop of Rome. Just in 2015, an Extraordinary Jubilee wanted by Pope Francis was celebrated, and the Shroud was unveiled. An event, the one held in Turin Cathedral, in Piazza San Giovanni in which not only the vicar of San Pietro had also participated, but which had attracted hundreds and hundreds of thousands of Catholics to the city. In fact, it is estimated that over one and a half million people from all over the world attended the event, as well as thousands of volunteers. Also in 2000, another year of the Jubilee in which John Paul II was the head of the Church of Rome, the linen was shown to the faithful. There are still more than 2 years to go until the next Jubilee, but in the meantime it seems that something is moving.

That's (Not) All Folks!
(Link to Shroud of Turin Blog page)

In our January 21, 2016 update, in an article titled, That's All Folks!, we reported the surprising news that, after seven successful years online, Dan Porter had retired his Shroud of Turin Blog page effective December 31, 2015. Thankfully, Dan left all of the contents online and available, so visitors could still go back and read all the past articles and posts. Now, after nearly seven years of silence, we are happy to report that the blog is back! In recent months we have seen a flurry of new activity, with many new articles and posts from Dan and other contributors. Rather than trying to list them all here, we suggest you take the time to visit the blog and read the new posts yourself. Congratulations Dan on the "resurrection" of the Shroud of Turin Blog!

In Memoriam

    Dr. Fernando Lagrifa Fernandes
1927-2022

I am deeply saddened to report the passing of Portugeuse Shroud scholar and co-founder of the Centro Português de Sindonologia, Dr. Fernando Lagrifa Fernandes, on July 26, 2022. I had the pleasure of meeting him while attending a conference in Fatima back in 2011. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends and colleages for their loss. I am grateful to my dear friends in Fatima, Antero de Frias Moreira and Maria da Glória Moreira for writing to give me the sad news. Here is the text of their e-mail:

I'm sad to announce to you that Dr. Fernando Lagrifa Fernandes, president and one of the founders of Centro Português de Sindonologia, peacefully passed away on 26 July 2022 at the age of 95 years,.after a long lasting illness. He was one of the founders of Centro Português de Sindonologia back in the 1980's and he had a great commitment to the Shroud. He gave many presentations on the Shroud and promoted many Shroud exhibits all over the country of Portugal, to spread the knowledge and devotion to the Shroud.

He also attended several international Shroud conferences and was the author of two books - "Santo Sudário" and "Reliquias de Cristo" ("Holy Shroud" and "The Relics of Christ"). He was a beloved husband and father and we're sure he is with God facing the Man of the Shroud. No doubt Portuguese Sindonology will miss this important enthusiast and we hope God allows us to continue his work.

Antero de Frias Moreira and Maria da Glória Moreira

Rest in Peace my friend!

Our sincere thanks to our good friend Tony Cherniawski, Lansing, Michigan Shroud advocate (and the man behind the Holy Face billboards that are popping up all over Lansing), for sending us an update on his project. Tony reports that three new billboards went up in June and will probably remain in place through October. He said more went up in July and August and he'll send us the details soon. Tony worked closely with Val Kelly of the Holy Face Project to get the project started and STERA, Inc. assisted him by providing the image and some of the other materials he needed. We are honored to continue our work with Tony and Val and many others to help this project grow.

Workshop Proceedings of the
1977 United States Conference on the Shroud of Turin

Admittedly, there is nothing "recent" about our lead in paper, which is actually a document from 1977. Once again, we are grateful to Joe Marino, who found this important document in his collection and sent it to us for inclusion on the website. We are also including it on the STURP's Published Papers page of the site. See the information below for more details. The papers in today's update are listed chronologically, with the most recent paper at the top of the list. Also available directly from the Routledge website. Here is an excerpt from the online description:

"...This book presents to English-speaking readers the research on the Sudarium of Oviedo, most of which has only been available in Spanish so far. It includes a thorough critical analysis and new unpublished studies. The bloodstained cloth is claimed to be a relic of Christ. This text discusses its trace through history, the many tests performed directly on it or on its samples, its devotional value, and its comparison with the Shroud of Turin...."

Riddles of the Shroud: Questions science can't answer by William West

Here is an excerpt from the online description:

"Scientists can’t work it out. For more than a century, the Shroud of Turin, with its mysterious image of Jesus in death, has been asking unanswerable questions. No one can explain, let alone replicate it. It looks like a smudge on a bit of old cloth, but it is a negative, 3D, high-resolution image made from the tiny discolored fibers of a cloth covered in blood, along with an image of a body stiff with rigor mortis. Despite a controversial carbon dating in the 1980s, the Shroud has now been dated four times to the first century––most recently in early 2022. Historians have found that before its sudden appearance in the Western world seven centuries ago, it had a long history in Eastern Europe, revealed by icons, coins and other evidence. Riddles of the Shroud examines the many impossible questions posed by the Shroud––questions even science can’t answer... After years of research, he has written an introduction for ordinary people to what he believes is ‘the most profound puzzle of all time’."

When Art Isn't Real: The World's Most Controversial Objects Under Investigation by Andrew Shortland and Patrick Degryse

Here is an excerpt from the online description:

"The art world is a multi-billion-dollar industry which captures world headlines on a regular basis, for both good and bad reasons. This book deals with one of the most-discussed areas of controversy: high-profile objects that have experts arguing about their veracity... The authors of this book have decades of experience in this field, working on a range of objects dating from prehistory to the twentieth century. They present seven of the most famous cases from the Getty Kouros to the Turin Shroud - some of which are still contested, and examine how a few words from a connoisseur or scientist can make a virtually valueless object worth hundreds of millions. And vice versa."

Shroud Related Videos and Audios

Who is the Man of the Shroud? Behind the Scenes 06: Production Update
Trailer for upcoming streaming video series
(Link to 5:16 video)

In the past few years we have seen an enormous increase in online Shroud related podcast video and audio programs, which now outstrip the number of Shroud internet articles that used to dominate the web. As you might expect, today's update includes another large selection of Shroud related videos and audios and features interviews with or presentations by many notable Shroud scholars. The real value of the podcast format is that the programs are usually unedited and do not have the same strict time limits that standard cable television documentaries do. That means you get to hear directly from the Shroud experts without interruption or editing. That allows them to go into more detail about their work and gives the viewer a better chance to understand it. You will find many familiiar names (and a few new ones) included on this list, which takes up more than five pages in today's update! Since there were far too many to include on this page, we have once again created a separate pdf file that includes all of the links and descriptions in a single file that you can download and view at your convenience (see link below). Items are listed in chronological order with the most recent at the top of the list.

Although this section is not as extensive as the videos and audios section mentioned above, there are still four pages of articles and links to new internet content in today's update! Of course, we can't include everything on this page, so we have once again created a separate pdf file that includes all of the links and descriptions in a single file that you can download and view at your convenience (see link below). Items are listed in chronological order with the most recent at the top of the list.

Spring Update! May 8, 2022

A Million Dollar Challenge to the British Museum!

I had originally planned to get this update online by Easter, but I got sick and spent a few weeks in bed and fell far behind in everything, so I had to postpone it until May 1st. However, there was so much new material that had to be included, I was forced to postpone it again, this time until May 4th (which also happens to be the official Feast Day of the Holy Shroud). Unfortunately, that still wasn't enough time, so I had to postpone it one more time, until today. On top of it being the Lenten season (always our busiest time of year), we also had the opening of a new Shroud exhibit in Washington, D.C., the release of a new Shroud film (that ends with a dramatic challenge to the British Museum), the publication of many important new Shroud papers, the selection of a new Archbishop in Turin and the appearance of about a million new podcasts, videos, radio shows and internet articles about the Shroud! I know I have said this about previous updates in the past, but today's update is far and away the largest in our 26 year history! I often jokingly suggest packing a lunch and a snack when visiting this website. For today's update, better pack a month's supply!

Today's update includes all of the stories mentioned above and much more. Once again, we extend our thanks to Joe Marino, who continues to amaze us with his massive output of Shroud information. There is also an update on the Holy Face Billboard Project and links to a huge number (and I mean HUGE) of new books, papers, websites, internet articles, videos, audios and podcasts! Please note that the Shroud Speakers Directory and the Shroud Centers & Organizations pages have also been updated although not mentioned elsewhere in today's update. Enjoy! - Barrie Schwortz, Editor

Here is the Update Table of Contents:

A New Shroud Film from David Rolfe

A New Shroud Film from David Rolfe
(Link to film website)

As many of you already know, British filmmaker David Rolfe produced and directed the first ever Shroud of Turin documentary in 1978 with his award winning film, The Silent Witness. (It won the 1978 BAFTA award in the U.K. for Best Documentary Film of the Year). Since then, David has produced a number of important Shroud films for the authorities in Turin and for various cable networks. However, his latest film was produced independent of any affiliations so there was no interference or outside influences to contend with. This film marks the culmination of David's more than forty years of Shroud scholarship and his major contributions to Shroud knowledge via his important documentaries. Consequently, this latest film, Who Can He Be?, is completely up to date and includes all the latest scientific and historical information. Although produced in the English language, to insure the broadest possible distribution of the film, David has made it available in a number of different languages, including German, Spanish, French, Italian, Dutch, Norwegian, Portuguese, Greek and Russian. Here's a link to the film's trailer on Facebook, which also features a beautiful song of the same title arranged and produced by Mic Burns with lyrics written by David, music composed by his daughter Sophie Breakenridge and a breathtaking performance by vocalist Sophy Purnell. The song was so inspirational it prompted noted blogger and podcaster Guy Powell to post the following article on his blog site: The Story and Lyrics Behind David Rolfe’s “Who Can He Be.”

The film also ends with an amazing Challenge to the British Museum! Here is what David wrote: "...To encourage them to make good on their claim, the producers of the film "Who Can He Be?" issue a challenge to the British Museum to replicate the image by offering a reward of US$1,000,000 (one million US dollars) if they succeed. The Shroud’s image has been analysed in detail and a very specific list of characteristics identified in peer reviewed publications..." Needless to say, the Challenge sparked an immediate response in the media. Below are links to just a few of the many articles that appeared (and there were a whole lot more), but I think you get the idea!

The Museum of the Bible in Washington, D.C. celebrated the Grand Opening of its major Shroud exhibit titled, Mystery & Faith: The Shroud of Turin on February 26, 2022. The exhibit is scheduled to run until July 31, 2022. The event featured in person guest speakers Russ Breault, Dr. Cheryl White and Fr. Robert Spitzer and Barrie Schwortz (appearing virtually). For those of you who could not attend the event (either in-person or virtually), the entire program is now available at this link: Mystery and Faith: The Shroud of Turin - Full Program (or by clicking on the above photograph). The video includes all the presentations along with the Q & A that took place afterwards and the brief remarks by Archbishop Christoph Pierre, the Apostolic Nuncio of Washington, D.C. Not included in the above program video was the appearance at the event by Canadian singing sisters Cassandra and Callahan Star, who performed a beautiful rendition of Leonard Cohen's, Easter Hallelujah - Cassandra & sister Callahan (in Washington, DC). Click on this link to view it.

But the above is just the tip of the iceberg! The Museum also presented a number of programs leading up to the event, so we are including links to them here:

And that is just the beginning of the amazing coverage afforded this story! There were so many online articles and podcasts leading up to and after the Exhibit opened that there were far too many to include on this page without asking you to scroll forever! So instead we are including them in a separate pdf document titled Mystery & Faith: The Shroud of Turin - Museum of the Bible Exhibit, Washington, D.C. - Various Articles and Videos, that you can download and view at your leisure. We believe we have included most of them (and we're sorry if we missed any). Enjoy!

Don Roberto Repole Named as New Archbishop in Turin

Don Roberto Repole Named as New Archbishop in Turin
(Link to Italian language article in La Stampa)

On February 19, 2022, it was formally announced in La Stampa and in the Vatican Press Hall, that Don Roberto Repole has been selected by the Holy See as the new Archbishop of Turin, to replace Monsignor Cesare Nosiglia, who has served in that position since being appointed on 11 October 2010. Our thanks to Joe Marino for providing us with an English translation of the La Stampa article titled, Don Repole new archbishop of Turin, friends: "The last few nights he didn't sleep, then the family party in Givoletto." In addition, Gian Maria Zaccone, current Director of the International Center for Sindone Studies (CISS) in Turin posted the following comments on Facebook:

Director of the International Center for Sindone Studies, Prof. Gian Maria Zaccone wanted to comment on the nomination through this statement that is reported here.

Today February 19, at 12 pm was officially announced in Turin, in the Sanctuary of the Consolata and at the same time at the Vaticana Press Hall the nomination of Don Roberto Repole to Archivescovo di Turin and Susa, in succession to S.E. Cesare Nosiglia.

Don Roberto is a long time friend, as well as staff, also from the Center, whose initiatives he often participated in. I remember among others his authoritative presence at the 2006 Convention "Watching the Sindone" in Turin and the one held at the Lateranense University in 2013 "The Passion of Jesus and the Sindone", with great theological and spiritual interventions They represent some milestone of theological reflection on Sindone.

He has long been part of the members of the International Scientific Committee of our Center. We are sure that with his competence and authority an Archbishop will also be careful about a proper pastoralization of the message of Sindone, and to him we assure our cooperation and constant prayer, as he requested in his speech to the Consulate, for his new ministry.

See you soon, Don Roberto!

Holy Face Billboards In Michigan

Holy Face Billboards In Michigan

Our sincere thanks to our dear friend Val Kelly of the Holy Face Project for giving us the heads up on the latest billboards, this time in Lansing, Michigan. STERA, Inc. worked with Lansing Shroud advocate Tony Cherniawski and assisted him by providing the image and other materials for his project. It was obviously deemed important enough for a feature about Tony and his work to appear on the Archdiocese of Lansing's website in a March 18, 2022 article titled, Read: Tony's Passion for Putting the Holy Face of Jesus on Billboards. We are honored to work with Tony and Val and many others to help this project grow. In fact, see the next article below for a look at the Holy Face Project in Spain.

Holy Face Billboards In Spain

Holy Face Billboards In Spain

Back in 2019 we reported on a New Billboard Project in Spain sponsored by our good friend and Shroud enthusiast David Collado, who lives in a village near Madrid. More recently he contacted us with a novel idea. Since we prefer that no large text be included on the billboards that could distract viewers from the image itself, he asked if he could include a small QR Code in the corner of each billboard. Since the boards are lower and more accessible to passers-by, they could simply scan the QR Code with their phones to get more information about the Shroud. We thought that was a great idea and gave him the go-ahead to proceed. You can see the results in the above images. You can view larger versions with more detail at the following links: Photo#1 (above left) or Photo #2 (above right). Here is an excerpt from the e-mail David sent us recently with the above photographs:

"I am glad to let you know the billboards were published last month. Please find attached a couple of photos of how they look now. One of the billboards is just very close to the church and to a grocery store in one of the main streets in Torrelodones, the other one is very close to the hospital, so we hope they will be watched by many people, so from my heart thank you again for letting it happen..."

Warmest regards from Spain,

David

Recently Published Papers & Articles

X-Ray Dating of a Turin Shroud's Linen Sample
by Liberato De Caro, Teresa Sibillano, Rocco Lassandro, Cinzia Giannini and Giulio Fanti

More than twenty new Shroud papers and articles were published in recent months and we are including them all in today's update. The papers are listed chronologically, with the most recent paper at the top of the list. All have also been permanently archived on the Scientific Papers & Articles page (alphabetically by title) and the Website Library page (alphabetically by author) or, when appropriate, on the Religion and Philosophy page (alphabetically by title) and the Website Library page (alphabetically by author). Since there were too many to include on this page, we are only including the first three here and have once again created a separate pdf file that includes all of the links and descriptions in a single file that you can download and view at your convenience (see link below).

Recently Published Books

A number of new Shroud related books were published since our last update so we are listing them here and have also permanently archived the new titles on the Shroud of Turin Booklist page (alphabetically by author). To make it easy to find the newest additions, we have annotated the listings with "(Added 8 May 2022)" so you can simply search for that phrase on the Booklist page should you forget the titles.

Forensics for Kids - The Science and History of Crime Solving, With 21 Activities by Melissa Ross

Also available directly from the Chicago Review Press website. One chapter features the Shroud. Here is an excerpt from the online description:

"Forensics for Kids provides the complete history of forensic science, giving readers a comprehensive understanding of the crime-solving advancements that led to modern forensics. Author Melissa Ross reveals fascinating stories, famous cases, pioneers who led the way, and what forensics might look like in the future. Twenty-one engaging activities offer readers hands-on experiences with modern forensic methods..."

[Editor's Note: The author has asked me to write a review of this book but my recent illness has kept me from doing so, so far. Although this book was written specifically for young people ages 9 and up, I am confident that many "older" readers will enjoy and benefit from reading it as well. We hear the term "forensics" used almost daily, but how many of us truly understand what it really involves and what diverse disciplines it includes? This book will answer those questions and much more (and it is an easy read too)!]

I Have Seen the Face of God and Lived by Margaret Casey

Here is an excerpt from the online description:

"...if the way in which I explain these things seems over-simplified or childish to you, please look at the photo on the cover and remember that the person to whom these great mysteries were revealed was that little girl sitting on her daddy's knee and even now, 70 years later, I can only tell you what I was able to understand as a four-year-old child. As I grew older, I learned about the Turin Shroud and realised that my Vision would have a direct bearing on its authenticity. This book is non-fiction, yet is far stranger than fiction. You may not believe it, though you should, because it is true. If it were not the truth, then there is no way I would have written it."

A Picture of God: How the Shroud of Turin changes everything by Daniel Speck

Here is an excerpt from the online description:

"The Shroud was considered by believers to bear an image of Jesus formed in some miraculous way and by skeptics to be no more than a painting on cloth. Not until Secondo Pia photographed it on May 28, 1898 was it discovered that the image on the Shroud was something much more inexplicable and historically unique than could be dismissed so easily. Whatever else you believe about the Shroud of Turin, there is one remarkable fact that even the most incredulous skeptic must acknowledge: it is the first true negative image in all of history. If it is a 14th century fabrication, it predates the second negative image by over 500 years, but if it is a genuine artifact from the 1st century, by over 1,800 years!"

Virgin Conception, A Very Rare Medical Condition: A Medical Breakthrough Research into the Shroud of Turin Revealed to the World by Kojo Boison

Here is an excerpt from the online description:

"The shroud of Turin caught the eye of some scientists, most definitely as a result of the perceived miracle behind the image on the piece of Linen cloth believed to have been a traditional burial cloth Jesus was buried in.An amateur photographer, Secondo Pia’s comment, confession (?), most definitely heightened interest in modern times. The Linen had become an object of religious veneration with its own devotees, known as “Shroudies.” These believe in the mystery of the image on the linen cloth, believed to be that of Jesus of Nazareth and literally dare those who doubt it to prove them wrong. So far, science has not been able to shift Shroudies’ belief and for that matter, believers’conviction..."

26th Anniversary Update! January 21, 2022

Shroud Live Streamed Online

Welcome to the 26th Anniversary Update of Shroud.com! We understand that it has been another difficult year for everyone and we hope that you and yours are staying safe and healthy. Of course, we wouldn't be here without you, so thank you all for being there and your continued participation and ongoing support! Trust that you are all truly loved and appreciated. We look forward to 2022 and hope it will be a better year for all of us.

This update is a little different from our previous Anniversary issues because absent (again) is my 2022 Lecture Schedule, which we typically included in our January updates. That is because I have not been booking any in-person presentations for nearly two years and intend to limit myself to mostly virtual presentations in the foreseeable future. That being said, this update leads off with the recent "Contemplation of the Holy Shroud of Turin" that was live streamed online on December 30, 2021. Also included are links to a number of important new Shroud papers, links to the latest issues of Sindon and the BSTS Newsletter, six newly archived issues of vintage Collegamento pro Sindone journals, an update on the Museum of the Bible "Mystery and Faith" Shroud of Turin exhibit, an update on the Holy Face Billboard Project, a memorial for a recently deceased Shroud scholar, links to many new websites, internet articles, videos, audios, podcasts and much more. Enjoy the update, thanks again and stay safe! - Barrie Schwortz, Editor

Here is the Update Table of Contents:

Taizé Pilgrim Event Postponed (Again) - Shroud Live Streamed Online

Contemplation of the Holy Shroud of Turin - December 30, 2021
(Link to video archive of live streamed event with English translation)

As we reported in our November 22, 2021 update, a special viewing of the Shroud was announced for December 2021 that was to be reserved exclusively for the members of the Taizé Community. This was planned to coincide with their annual meeting of Europe’s youth that was being held in Turin and which had already been postponed from 2020 due to COVID-19 issues. Unfortunately, the event had to be cancelled again this year and has been rescheduled for July 2022. However, the live streamed Contemplation of the Holy Shroud that was scheduled to take place on December 30th went on as planned. In case you missed it, you can find a video archive of the Italian language event with an English voice over translation at the above link. If you prefer, you can also view the program in the original Italian language version. [Editor's Note: The program doesn't begin until about 5:20 into the video]

Six Collegamento pro Sindone Printed Issues Added to Archive

Collegamento pro Sindone Issue #32
(Link to Collegamento pro Sindone archive on Shroud.com)

Our archive of all the earlier printed issues of the Italian language journal Collegamento pro Sindone (1985-2000) has been updated with six more issues (from January 1989 to December 1989), all of which can now be found on the Collegamento pro Sindone page here on Shroud.com.

Starting with their January-February 1986 issue, they published six issues each year for the next fifteen years, so the archive will eventually include all 90 of those issues as well. We will keep adding issues until the archive is complete. Our sincerest thanks to Emanuela and all of the respected Shroud scholars and researchers who contributed to make this journal such an important resource.

Update on the Holy Face Billboard Project

Update on the Holy Face Billboard Project
(Link to Holy Face Project website)

Our good friend Val Kelly, Project Manager and founder of the Holy Face Project, sent us a new update recently, highlighting the progress made by her organization. We are very pleased to have worked with Val since the inception of her ambitious project and are even more pleased to see how it has grown. I am reprinting the text of her update here:

"As last year unfolded, so did confusion and concern - a most important time to have The Holy Face of Our Lord silently and powerfully reminding travelers of His Presence. Since this project commenced in 2018, billboards have graced our roadways (during various timeframes) in Omaha NE, Lincoln NE, Grand Island NE, Marshalltown IA, Lamberton MN, Bismarck ND, Brighton MI, Lansing MI, Newport KY, Greenville SC, Hilton Head Island SC, and Richmond Hill GA.

"Millions have come across the Image of Our Lord as they trekked the highways. Some may view His reassuring Image daily as they travel to and from work. For others, it may be a one-time experience and hopefully a memorable one.

"Our prayer is that, with anxiety experienced by so many in their daily lives, a flicker of peace and calm is felt as His Holy Face reminds us that Jesus is with us with His everlasting love.

"As effort, determination, communication, and perseverance are required to follow through on each Holy Face project, we immensely appreciate all the project coordinators who have made their billboard installations a reality. Individuals, groups, and families have taken part in bringing Our Lord to their neighbors, friends, and community.

"Should you be interested in bringing a billboard of The Holy Face to your community, email us at info@theholyfaceproject.com."

In Memoriam

    Heinrich Pfeiffer, SJ
1939-2021

I am deeply saddened to report the passing of well known Shroud scholar and art historian Father Heinrich Pfeiffer, SJ, on November 26, 2021, at the Peter Faber House in Berlin-Kladow. From 1973 until his retirements in 2009, he was Professor of Art History and Christian Iconography at the Faculty of Church History of the Pontifical Gregorian University. Becoming Professor emeritus in 2009, after more than forty years, Father Pfeiffer left the Gregorian in 2014, moving to Palermo to the Casa Professa, Residenza del Santissimo Nome di Gesù. Since 2019, he had been living in Germany, in the Jesuit Community of St Peter Favre in Berlin. He was best known in the Shroud world as the primary promoter of the controversial Veil of Manoppello image as the true Veronica's Veil. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends and colleagues for their loss. Rest in Peace Father.

To make it easy to find the newest additions, we have annotated the listing with "(Added January 21, 2022)" so you can simply search for that phrase on the Booklist page should you forget the title.

The Secret Cross: Inscriptio Frontis on the Shroud of Turin by Sergio Artures Garces

Here is an excerpt from the online description:

"In the famous Shroud of Turin, there are three symbols branded on the forehead of Jesus; the most notorious is a symbol with the shape of a cross... This in-depth study investigates the physical, geometric and anatomical characteristics of the marks, their relationship with the Roman penal marks called inscriptio frontis, the verses of the New Testament in the oldest versions in Greek where it is narrated how Jesus was inscribed, the possible mentions of these marks in extra-biblical texts and, finally, the probable pre-configuration of the so-called inscriptio frontis in the Old Testament...."

It is impossible to know at this moment exactly when the next website update will go online. I know it will be sometime in the Spring, but no specific dates have yet been determined. As always, the next update will include the latest papers, books, articles, podcasts, videos and any breaking Shroud news.
