International Congress for the
Study of the Shroud of Turin
"Science and the Shroud"

(The 1998 Turin Symposium)

June 5 through 7, 1998
Unione Industriale
Turin, Italy

The Third International Congress for the Study of the Shroud of Turin was held in Turin, Italy, on June 5 through June 7, 1998. The theme of the event was "Science and the Shroud" and it was sponsored by the Centro Internazionale di Sindonologia di Torino (International Center for Sindonology in Turin), an organization founded by Archbishop Cardinal Maurilio Fossati II on December 18, 1959. Professor P.L. Baima Bollone served as the President of the Organizing Committee.

The President of the Congress was Professor R. Bertolino and the Scientific Committee included Professors Alan Adler, Pierluigi Baima Bollone, Nello Balossino, Bruno Barberis, Karlheinz Dietz, Doctor Mechtild Flury-Lemberg, Professors Don Giuseppe Ghiberti, Pietro Kaswalder, Heinrich Pfeiffer, Doctor Daniel Raffard de Brienne, Professors Piero Savarino, Silvano Scannerini and Doctor Gian Maria Zaccone.

For a more detailed look at the event, read "The '98 Symposium: A Personal Report." It is my personal account of the symposium, its participants and its impact on the future of Shroud research. It gives you a look at the congress from the perspective of one who attended and presented a paper. I should warn you that it begins by casting a critical eye on the symposium and its organization. The opinions expressed are solely my own. It includes 6 color photographs.

The schedule included below is the original version distributed to the attendees of the symposium. The day and time that the papers were actually presented frequently varied from the schedule.
