Technical Notes About This Website

Optimize your viewing...

Dear Guest:

Since the subject of this website is itself an image, and many large, high quality photographs have been included on this site for your examination, it is important to optimize your system for the best viewing. The first time you visit this site, it may take some time to load the various pages, depending on how many images each page contains, the speed of your connection and your choice of browser. Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator, and America On Line all incorporate a cache that stores information about each page you visit, so the next time you visit that site it will load much faster. Since the Shroud of Turin deserves careful examination, quality has been given a higher priority than speed.

To view the images at this site with the highest possible quality, use a FULL SCREEN rather than a smaller sized window. If possible, turn your browser's button or tool bars off to increase the viewing area even more. If you are using America On Line, adjust your preferences for uncompressed image viewing to see them at their highest resolution. If you can, set your monitor for the highest resolution and number of colors possible on your system (800x600 pixels and 64,000 colors is the minimum I would recommend). If you are viewing with 256 colors or less, some degradation will occur in the background since the website is optimized for 24 bit color. Also, some browser software checks the date of the page you are viewing and compares it to that cached in your computer. It will only reload a page that has been updated since your last visit. Other browser software requires you to reload pages manually. If you are using a program that does not automatically update pages, use your "Reload" button from time to time to make sure you are looking at the latest version of each page.

Remember, there are many different web browser, computer and connection combinations possible. Even the type of server you use will make a difference. Both hardware and software must be optimized for maximum browsing efficiency. If you experience any difficulty during your visit, please notify us via e-mail at problems@shroud.com and be sure to include a full description of your problem. You might also check your browser's documentation or your server's home page for information about viewing images on the web.

About your browser...

Since this web site was originally written and tested using many Netscape extensions, you can be sure that all of our web site features will be functional if you view us with Netscape. It was the first popular browser and led the way in establishing the newest web standards, particularly those for graphics. The speed of animated gifs on your screen is dictated by the clock speed and swap file of your computer, so faster CPU's with larger swapfiles make for faster animation. There is no Flash animation on this website.

Although this site was designed to be visual, care was taken to create pages that can be viewed with most browsers, including text-only programs. Consequently, there is no need for any plug-ins or "helper" applications to view the content of this site, other than the Adobe Acrobat .pdf viewer, which is free to download and comes installed on almost every new computer these days. Of course, if you have a broadband connection (cable modem, DSL or T1 Line) images on this site will load instantly.

About this website...

You can reach the Shroud of Turin MAIN MENU from every primary page of this website by clicking on the Shroud facial image photo in the top left corner of each page. In addition, you can jump to certain pages on the website by using the pushbutton navigator buttons found at the bottom of many of the pages.

This web site is optimized for an 800x600 screen displaying 64,000 (or more) colors and is benchmarked on a 56k modem. The site was initially designed and built using HTML Assistant Pro 1.0 Freeware. It is now maintained and updated using HTML Assistant Pro 3.0 Commercial software. Primary image processing software is Adobe Photoshop 5.0 and CS and Macromedia X-Res 2.0. Animated gifs are built with Gif Construction Set shareware.

You will notice a marked absence of ads and logos on this website out of respect for the subject matter. However, I've made one exception to the rule and included this logo because I feel indebted to Howard Harwitz of Brooklyn North Software Works, the author of HTML Assistant Pro software, who, in the earliest days of the Internet, graciously made available an easy-to-use and completely free program for novice web builders like myself. Without it, this site would not be here.

And finally, these Technical Notes can only be accessed from the Shroud of Turin Website MAIN MENU.
