Closeup of two of the larger patches sewn into the Shroud in 1534 by the Poor Clare nuns. The patches were used to repair burn holes in the Shroud, caused by a fire on December 4, 1532, in the chapel in which it was then stored, in Chambery, France. Notice that the scorching is less intense in this area than in Patches 1 and 2 at the opposite end of the Shroud, indicating that this half of the cloth was folded inside the other when it was burned.
